Yelp - The Review

Love it or hate it, Yelp is here to stay.

If you are not familiar, Yelp is a social media platform featuring user-generated reviews for businesses and restaurants.

You can sign up for free and review the Empire State Building, your local Wal-Mart, that old roller skating rink in your hometown, your favorite bar, whatever you feel like.

Now, a fair number of business owners and published restaurant reviewers hate Yelp.  Absolutely hate it.  Do a Google search on “Why People Hate Yelp” and you will get a plethora of results.  See here and here.

Restaurant and small business owners hate Yelp because anyone can write super-harmful negative reviews and destroy their businesses.  Allegedly, good reviews hardly ever appear unless the owner pays for marketing on Yelp.

Published restaurant reviewers hate Yelp because it allows people unfamiliar with the restaurant business to post uninformed reviews.  Yelp also threatens their very livelihood as well.

Now, I myself use Yelp.

I can tell you that Yelp users run the gamut from those with hometown local pride, seeking to spread the word about their favorite hole in the wall places, to name dropping’ high society, 30K millionaires looking to be impressed by the cuisine.   It is just like Facebook.

There are users you avoid and those that have you rolling with laughter because they are describing how ratchet the parking lot looked like outside of their favorite Thai place.

Yelp rewards its most active reviewers, given the status “Elite”, perks such as invitations to free events in which food and drink samples are provided.  “Elite” events are highly coveted in the Yelp community.

Yelp structures its user experience in such a way that rewards are given out to users that review businesses as often as possible.  This generates free content for Yelp.

Note, users are urged to be as honest as possible and are not pressured to write completely positive or completely negative reviewers.  Neither are they paid or compensated for their reviews.

Yelp works much like a video game.  The more time spent playing, the more rewards accrue.  Most Yelp users, are as good as their word.  They try to be extremely honest and write accurately about their own personal experience.

Some however, do not.  As with every social media site, there are users that are dishonest or over exaggerating.

Yelp was not created to hold back businesses.  People do not use Yelp to have a business owner fail, lose their livelihood and be thrown out with their spouse and five children on the street.

Most people still don’t what the heck Yelp is.  Most people still talk to their family, friends and co-workers about a bad experience at a restaurant.

Yelpers can detect when other reviewers are full of bull shit.  Business owners can directly reply back to the reviews and contact unhappy parties, to either apologize or to bitch that reviewer personally.

There are two sides to every story.

Personally, I love the ability to write funny reviews and to bring notice my favorite local haunts.  I love being part of the Dallas – Fort Worth community and Yelp facilitates with that.

What are your thoughts?

Do you use Yelp?

Simple DIYs for a Fun & Whimsical 4th of July!

The Fourth of July is almost here!

In anticipation, I've rounded up some simple DIYs for a fantastic holiday bash.

Enjoy!

Decor

Link

I'm in love with this holiday wreath.  If you have kids, let them help by making pom-poms with yarn.  It's super easy and all you have to do is glue or pin onto wreath base and voila!  Instant cuteness!

Link
Click on the above link to find a free printable banner from PagingSuperMom.com.  This is probably one of the easiest DIYs on this list.  Just print, cut and staple and you can adorn your home or patio in just a few minutes.

Link
These Mason Jar Painted Lanterns may take some prep time in painting and then letting the paint dry but they look so worth it!  Really, just when you thought you had seen every craft under the sun involving Mason Jars, someone clever thinks of yet another use.  Just make sure to paint the outside, not the inside!

Outfit

Pinterest Link

I never have any idea what to wear for a Fourth of July party.  For so long I just threw on one of those Old Navy patriotic themed shirts and called it a day.  Now I can turn my old jeans into cutoffs, and paint those cutoffs with fabric paint!  Genius....or shall I say Jean-ius? (Shut up, puns are fun)

Link

Now you can buy this headband from Fab.com or....................you can just make it with some glitter foam sheets and a black stretchy headband.  Just cut out three stars to your liking from gold glitter foam sheets that can be found at most craft stores and attached to headband with some hot glue.  Pretty and simple.

Link
Or if you fancy, you could do a version with fake flowers instead.  You know this how Lana Del Rey does it.  I mean I assume.  Who doesn't like the Fourth of July?  Canadians, that's who!  And probably the rest of the world.

Food

Pinterest Link
Usually, I'm pretty happy with a hot dog and some ice cream on the Fourth of July, but my mom likes to make a similar Strawberry Spinach salad as pictured above.  Just toss blueberries, sliced strawberries, almonds and some crumbled feta cheese in with some spinach leaves.  Then drizzle with some raspberry balsamic dressing and you have a tasty, festive salad sure to please!

Link

Oh mah gawd!  Patriotic Taco Salad sounds amazing and slightly ironic, no?  I could also see this as a way to dress up a Seven Layer Dip.  Just decorate the stripes with shredded cheese and sliced tomatoes.  Add some olives and extra guac to the top left corner and you have the most delicious version of the American flag to ever exist.

Link
Dude, ice cream floats with red and blue sodas?  I'm soooo there.  This one is pretty much a no-brainer but so pretty and tasty looking at the same time.

Games

Link
Okay so I may have lied a little bit when I said, "simple DIYs" but how awesome is this Patriotic Corn Hole set?  Yes, to some of my readers out there, there is a game called "corn hole" and it is played quite frequently outdoors.  Basically it is a set of elevated boards with a hole cut out across the very top.  Players divide into teams and try to sink as many bean or sand filled sachets through the top or "corn" hole.  If you know how to build or know someone with basic carpentry skills, how cool would it be to bust these babies out?  Painted in red, white and blue.

Link

Now this Custom Beer Pong Table is entirely within my skill set.  Just get a slab of plywood or if you'd like something sturdier, a hollow-core door, from any hard-ware store and paint a flag using painter's tape for straight edges.  Then rest the table on top a pair of saw horses and your patriotic tribute to drinking games is now complete!

So tell me, my precious readers, what plans do you have in store for the holiday?

How to have the Best Memorial Day Cookout Evah!

Source
Greetings!  I did not realize that Memorial Day was fast approaching us, here in the US.  (Yes, I'm gonna pretend my humble blog attracts readers from all over the globe)  I know people usually are saddened to learn that Americans do not typically celebrate the first of May, or May Day, as is celebrated in many other countries.  I guess Memorial Day is the closest thing we have, since it still technically occurs in May and honors all the the men and women who died in the US Armed Forces, serving the country.

As I have tweeted before, most American holidays that do not include the exchange of presents or candy usually is celebrated by day drinking.  I don't know why, though sometimes the only thing that gets me through Thanksgiving with the relatives is glass of white wine shortly after breakfast.

I'm kidding Mama!

For Memorial Day everyone loves a good cookout, myself included.  So I've been spending time on Pinterest collecting ideas on how to through the best Memorial Day cookout, ever, in my humble little backyard.

First up?  Dranks!!  (Thas' was'up!)

DRINKS

I like the idea of providing mixed drinks and beer.  A non-alcoholic version of this watermelon punch sounds fruity and delicious for the kiddos and responsible adults.

Watermelon Punch Recipe

Pre-mixing cocktails and storing them in mason jar on ice would be a good way for guests to simply grab and enjoy, no necessary trips indoors.

Source

Of course there is always beer at my cookout but I always wonder if there's a better way to display them, rather than sticking them in a cheap Styrofoam cooler.  I mean a kiddie pool isn't exactly high-class either but it puts all the delicious beer on display, whereas with the coolers the beers always seem hidden from view.

FOOD

For food there is the classic standby of hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill.  I want to take it a step further and make bacon wrapped hot dogs this year because you know it really isn't a true celebration unless bacon is involved.  (Apologies to my vegan and/or international friends).  You don't even need a grill, just make them in the oven.

Cheesy Bacon Wrapped Hotdogs Recipe
For sides, I love this version of the potato salad my mom usually makes.  It foregoes mayo and uses Italian dressing or oil/vinegar.  No mayo recipes are golden when your party takes place outdoors.

I'd also include a little bit of Mexican heritage and add an elotes bar.  Boiled or roasted corn topped with a little butter, cheese and/or mayo?  What's not to love?

Elotes Bar Recipe
Save me some of that corn!

DECOR

I really wouldn't try to decorate my backyard in anticipation of a cookout, except to put up as many hammocks as I could.  Pretty much everyone goes for an outdoor hammock, no matter the event.

DIY Hammock Instructions

How cool is this group hammock made from a trampoline?  Probably best for the kiddos, huh?  I can imagine my twin kid sisters hopping on, making room for me, and then me breaking the damn thing but.....it still looks fun!

ICE CREAM SHOP

You have to have ice cream.  It's summer, it's warm, it's just what has to be done.  I'm truly sorry if you are lactose intolerant, there are some pretty yummy fruit pops around though.  I would totally build this little ice cream front from some spare cardboard and have the kids run the shop.  Not that I have kids.  I'm unmarried but you know, the neighborhood kids.

Source

Adults can come up while the kids make their sundae order or  hand them a store-bought popsicle. My 8 year old self would have been alllll over this!  I used to help scoop ice cream at day care for the younger kids afternoon snack.  I could make the perfect lil' scoop.  I'd be like, "I got this Teach!". Ahhh memories, for Memorial Day.

What ridiculously awesome plans do you have going on?  Seriously, even sleeping in and eating instant ramen sounds appealing to me.  NO WORK, WOOHOO!

Fear of Missing Out

Last weekend, yes Easter Weekend of all things, I was experiencing some FOMO or the Fear of Missing Out.  There were so many free activities I had planned after a particularly stressful work week.  The was the free Late Night at the Dallas Museum Art on Friday night, the Dallas Etsy Spring Bash outdoor market Saturday morning, and of course Record Store Day with food, festivities and music all day at several shops in Dallas and Fort Worth.  There was also the grand opening of Melt Ice Creams Saturday night in Fort Worth.

But……………………………….

I really needed to mow my backyard.  And sleep in some.

After the work week I was ready to have tons of fun but my backyard was severely overgrown with weeds, tall thick dandelion stalks, home to a million plus mosquitos.  I also couldn’t wake up before nine, instead awaking at 11:30 am, rubbing my eyes in a weird foggy daze.

Shit, I thought.

Now I was going to have to hustle to make the Etsy Spring Bash.  As I slowly awoke over a cup of coffee, I noticed my dog, Lil Mama, had virtually vanished behind a huge patch of weeds.  I had been given a notification by the city the spring before, telling me my lawn was overgrown and I would be fined if it was not taken care of.  I didn’t want that to happen again.  My dog, a blue heeler-lab mix, was an outdoor dog and loved lying out in the sun all day.

But I didn’t want to miss all the awesome activities!

I wanted, nay NEEDED to go out and meet cool people because A – I have never had a boyfriend in my entire LIFE, B – I wanted to make new friends with stranger, which is generally easy for me and C – my bestest friends in the world are always working during the weekends.  Plus I wanted to get tips for my own Etsy shop!  This would help my love life, my social life and my business!

After I agonized a few minutes, I was like, fuck it.  You know what?  Just fuck it.  So I would miss out on some really awesome stuff.  Who cares?  There was a reason I couldn’t wake up early, because I need rest.  And now my dog needs me, and my home needs me.  We are the people we are, not because of the same concert everyone went to, or the same party everyone attended, but because of our differences.  Because of the DIFFERENT choices we each make.

So I mowed my lawn.

All of this.....

Not that I did a great job but it got done.

As soon as I was done, Lil’ Mama flopped on her back, rubbing her fur into the newly shorn yard.  I took a shower, and made some guacamole and a grapefruit gin and tonic.  Then lay on the couch reading a book.  It was heaven.

I bet those activities didn't have fresh guac.

See no one ever brags about mowing their lawn on Facebook or posting it on their blog.  We are lead to believe we are missing out by living our own lives.  I feel lazy for not coming up with brilliant DIY ideas on a regular basis.  I feel jealous for not being a wonderful baker or a clean living cooks.  I love to take photographs whenever I go on a trip but it's not nearly enough to sustain two posts a week.

Never fear missing out, what you are gaining is a sense of self and nothing, not even a blog, can give you that.

Amen,
Marg

Decor Ideas for Hosting an Easter Lunch

Easter never gets all the hype the Christmas does, but it should.  I mean not just for religious reasons but because Easter coincides with a beautiful season, Spring.  I remember hunting for Easter Eggs as a child with my two younger sisters.  My mom would hide them around the house.  My younger sister S would tear around the house, showing no mercy, grabbing every egg in sight.  My mom still hides one egg in my sister’s home in Indianapolis.  Picks the hardest place she can find, just so my sister can still experience the thrill of the hunt.

My mom still hides eggs around the house for me and my youngest sister T, now both grown adults.  She hides them inside of light fixtures, underneath furniture, buried under a bowl of fruit.  She’s pretty crafty, my mom.

Pretty much my mom and step dad the night before....."hahaha, they'll never find the egg in here".  Source

When my dad remarried, we used to spend Easters with him and my stepmothers' family, gathering for a huge outdoor picnic.  Both my parents were cradle Catholics, and raised me and my sisters the same way.  We never got out of going to church, it was the one thread that held both sides of my mom’s family and dad’s family together, but at the picnics we were too old to hunt Easter Eggs.  Instead we took turns donning an Easter Bunny suit for the younger kids.

Similar to a sports mascot, the suit zipped up the back, covering you in a coat of synthetic fur, and the mask was an over sized bunny head, with two tiny holes for the eyes.  The nose of the bunny was so over sized, you couldn't look down to see where you were going.  I quickly realized why Mickey and Minnie at Disneyland always did that creepy, head patting motion at Disneyland.

This was me....."oh where are you, screaming child?  For I cannot SEE!" Source

It’s because you literally cannot see small children in that suit.  You have to pet their heads to find out where they are.  You’ll just feel something hug you suddenly at like knee level but you cannot see where the child is.

Aside from Easter Egg Hunts or Easter Bunny suits this year I want to celebrate by hosting an Easter lunch at my house.

As always I turn to Pinterest for some fresh inspiration, whenever I get too discouraged by all the cookie cutter holiday decor out there.

Here are my picks for the table setting.

Table Runner

I was looking for some type of alternative to the traditional pastel colored table runner and thought this cute version made from burlap would be really simple to do.  You can make the little bunny tails with white pom poms and I like how it doesn’t absolutely scream EASTER.

Source

Place Card Settings

You do a two in one, using little planted succulents as a place card setting and take home gift favor. Yes, succulents are everywhere, I know, so why not add them to Easter?  I love the inclusion of the pink aquarium gravel you can get at any pet store to make it more seasonal looking.  I know the succulents and mini terracotta pots are some of the cheapest things to buy at a hardware store.  How cute with this be, with a little name card propped up against it?

Source

Centerpiece

For centerpieces, I usually see the standard pastel colored eggs in a plastic or wood basket.  It’s not too bad but I was looking for something unusual and cheap.  Always what’s cheapest.  I love this combination of glittery eggs and simple carnations thrown together in a white bowl.  I really like how the colors pop against the white and how the glitter adds an extra layer of texture.  Low cost, inventive and easy to make, what’s not to love?

Party Favors for the Kids

This year I want to invite my two twin kid sisters as well.  They will almost be 11 this year, but hopefully that’s not too old to be into these adorable DIY Bunny Ears.  You can make several pairs with colored construction paper and colored tissue paper, just glue to a cheap headband and voila!  I will totally make some for the adults as well.  Instagram will be all like blowing up with the photo ops these bunny ears will provide.

Source

Household Décor

I do usually sprinkle my seasonal décor throughout my living room and dining room to set the tone.  While I’m not all that crazy about a ton of pastel colors, I think I can live with a little pastel, especially when juxtaposed with neon colors.

Source

Source - A Pretty Life In The Suburbs

How cute are those neon branches?  These would be super easy to scatter artfully along my bookshelf or in a glass vase on my coffee table.  The garland, while pastel, seems doable to me, especially if you keep around a lot of yarn, like I do.  I like the pastel colored yarn balls, giant pom-poms, and the tiny birdhouses you can find at most craft stores for a dollar a pop.  While I don’t have a fireplace or even a mantel I can picture a garland like this adorning my side table, or *ahem* even my bar cart.

So what you are guys looking forward to for the Easter holidays?  I personally gave up pizza for Lent and have been daydreaming about the greasiest slice for almost six weeks now.  What traditions does your family have?

Drop me a line in the comments!  I want to know!

Let's Do Dallas - Part Three - Where to Eat!

I’m going to preface this by pointing out, yes Dallas has a lot of food, a lottttttttttt of restaurants.  Maybe not as many as Houston, but we are the birthplace of the frozen margarita and we eat out almost every night.
That being said, you can find a bunch of fine dining establishment, steakhouses, trendy ramen noodle spots, Thai places with white tablecloths, sushi experiences costing almost half your paycheck and the like, which seems to be the norm in most major cities.

I will not point these out to you.  You can read all the “foodie” reviews on Yelp.  Dallas has spawned its own foodie base and you can see what they recommend if fine dining is what you want.  I have never been to those places and so I will  recommend great tasting, cheap and and/or beloved Dallas food institutions.

You’re gonna be SO HUNGRY after this!

Like Part Two, we will move through this list from North to South.

Knox/Henderson Area

Fadi’s

First up is Fadi’s Mediterranean Grill.  There are a few locations around the Dallas – Fort Metroplex.  There are also a few Mediterranean Restaurants located in DFW, usually in a strip mall, close to a church or a Home Goods store, they are pretty common.  Fadi’s however is not common.  You can get all your favorite things like hummus, falafel, kebabs, pita bread and stuff ala carte like in a cafeteria but my favorite item is their schwarmas.    They fill you up just like an Avenger (from the movie….did you see the part at the very end?) and you’ll be moaning because it’s just too delicious to put down.

The Porch

Across the highway you’ll find The Porch.  They do signature cocktails, and American style comfort food like brisket sliders, fries, smoked ham and cheese, gooey butter cake and more.  With its dim lighting and cozy booths, this place good for a date or a group.

This place is a touch fancy but not too nice, you can show up in jeans, but the parking is valet.  Which allows you to get a very tasty appetizer or meal, then walk across Henderson Street to The Old Monk.

The Old Monk

The Old Monk serves craft beers, cocktails, wine, snacks and good pub food too.  I would recommend coming here after the Porch though and getting something to nosh on later in the night, because the parking here is tight, plus a full meal at the Porch including appetizers and dessert can be a little steep, like $20 to $45 per person.

The pub atmosphere inside is warm and inviting.  The little patio section outside allows you to take in the scenery.  I highly recommend this place, it’s laid back Dallas, not douche-y Dallas.

Upper Greenville Area

Café Brazil

Café Brazil is an institution in these parts.  Everyone remembers their first time, leaving a concert that ran into the late night, looking for someplace close to eat good food.  Kind of like IHOP or Denny’s but better.
Again there are multiple locations but my favorite is located of off Highway 75 close to the SMU campus.  Not that I went to SMU (oh hell, nah) but the SMU McFarlin auditorium hosts a lot musical acts, including Sufjan Stevens, of which I have attended from time to time.

Café Brazil does breakfast, lunch and dinner with a Brazilian twist.  You will never have better crepes, stuffed with savory fillings like, chicken, cheese and chorizo.

You can also buy and take home the coffee they serve in about a dozen flavors.  It’s pretty decent but if you are from Seattle or Portland you won’t be blown away.  Still is makes a better souvenir than a postcard.

Arts District Area

El Fenix

El Fenix is a staple of Dallas.  Home of the classic Tex-Mex where you can get the two cheese enchilada plate with rice and beans under $10.  It’s not authentic Mexican cuisine and it’s not better than whatever Rick Bayless whips up but it’s our food, and has been this way for decades.  For a town that’s always planning it’s next facelift, El Fenix is tried and true and remains standing.  If you’re from anyplace in Texas you know what you’re getting here.  A warm, deliciously cheesy, gooey enchilada served with a smile.  The ole stand byes of complimentary chips and salsa, frozen margaritas, and fluffy sopapillas covered in cinnamon sugar.

The particular location off of 75 and McKinney Avenue is across the street from the Perot Museum and two blocks down from the Nasher Sculpture Garden and the Dallas Museum of Art.  It’s easily the cheapest, fastest and tastiest meal within miles.  You should go.

Downtown Area

Fuel City Tacos

Fuel City Tacos is located inside a giant gas station where the corners of Downtown meets North Oak Cliff.  It is located very close to the Reunion Tower and also the Lew Sterrett Justice Center aka Dallas’ Jail.  Now I’m not trying to scare you.  I have never had any troubles at Fuel City Tacos and there are always many cops dropping by here to buy tacos.

If you told me, “quick Marg! I’ll be in Dallas for one hour! Where should I go?”  I will tell you Fuel City Tacos.  If you asked me where to go if you had a whole week in Dallas and a million dollars to spend, I would still tell you to go to Fuel City Tacos first.

Fuel City does street style tacos with meat, corn tortillas, a little bit of onion, cilantro and lime.  My favorite is the beef barbacoa and I always stop by the elote cart to get some boiled corn with sour cream, cheese, and hot sauce.  It’s a Mexican thing so try it, even if sour cream with corn sounds gross.

This is the type of food that crosses racial and economic barriers.  This is the place that shouldn't be in Dallas, if you believe Dallas is a soul-less, money obsessed, superficial town.  I know better and I couldn't be prouder that this place exists.  Dallas is it’s people and we love food, we love our home, and we try to get along with each other.

Deep Ellum Area

Twisted Root

Twisted Root, like El Fenix, has many locations in the Dallas – Fort Worth area, but the best location is usually close to downtown Dallas.  In this case I recommend the location located in Deep Ellum.  Twisted Root does your basic burger, your basic cheeseburger,  exotic burgers like bison meat, and creative burgers like the Frito Bandito topped with chili, guacamole, cheddar cheese and Fritos chips.  The staff does try to give you attitude and bust your balls about ordering.  To pick up your order, they give you a cutesy tag with name like Borat or Courtney Love, and then call your order saying, “Borat your order is ready! Verrrry nice”.

It’s not the best burger I've ever eaten in my life, because I’m weird and think that the Fuddrucker’s by my work has like the Will Hunting version of a grill cook, but only the Fuddrucker’s location by my work.  However, Twisted Root does everything and I mean EVERYTHING with a creative twist.  You will not be disappointed, plus you will get some good grub in your belly before witnessing an awesome music show in Deep Ellum.

Barbeque

Now I know right about now you are thinking, “but wait!  Isn’t Texas renowned for barbeque?”  Yes it is and I’ve eaten in various barbeque joints in the metroplex.  Good barbeque but currently Dallas is experiencing a BBQ Snob phase.  I blame Franklin’s in Austin, frankly. (I love my puns….don’t judge)  Right now the trend is to wait hours in line for THE BEST bbq in the area.  We have Pecan Lodge here, but it’s a trend that I don’t subscribe too.  I don’t approve of tracking the best bbq in spreadsheets or scoring systems.  I don’t approve of waiting hours in line for a cuisine that is every Southerner’s birthright.  I don’t approve of the growing elitism in barbeque.

In short if you are craving BBQ? Check the suburbs.  There are a million good places.

Food Trucks

A trend that I do approve of is food trucks.  Who doesn’t love food trucks?  There are few that appear at all the good music festivals and outdoor events that I absolutely love.  They usually appear in the above areas that I have described on a pretty frequent basis.

Easy Slider

Yeah they do burgers, mini burgers, you may also know them as sliders but did you know they top them with stuff like goat cheese and raspberry preserves?  Or peanut butter and bacon?  Yes, Margaret if God owned a food truck this would be it, because no matter how drunk you are or how wild the night has been, Easy Slider is there to cradle you in a warm bed of delicious sliders.  Plus the ladies inside the truck are ALWAYS hella nice.

Ssahm BBQ

Two words: Kimchee Fries.  Okay, no wait….uhh….a few more words.  Here we go. Fries topped with Korean barbeque beef, monterey jack & cheddar cheese, caramelized kimchee, spicy mayo, cilantro and onion.  You…you’re hungry now, right?

Nammi

Nammi serves Bahn Mi and huge rice bowls.  At $8 a pop I was not thinking you would get so much yummy food with rice bowl option with the barbequed meat.  Vietnamese is such a refreshing choice when you frequent the park or the outdoor music festivals in the height of the Texas summertime heat and cannot survive eating something fried. Nammi loads their food with tons of good veggies, so you get full with the good stuff.  Sometimes I loves me a cheeseburger but sometimes you just need to go with a healthier option, amiright?

So….what are you waiting for?  Come out to Dallas!  There’s plenty of friendly, interesting people eager to show you the hidden stuff.  The parts of Dallas that feel like home.  Drop me a line if you are ever in the area.  I would love to show you around! Texas people, what places would you add to this list?

Let me know!
